Sundance Channel Acquires "Sierra Club Chronicles"
Seven Part Series To Air As Part of Robert Redford Presents THE GREEN on Sundance Channel Beginning February 5th, 2008
(CSRwire) NEW YORK, NY - December 14, 2007 – Sundance Channel has acquired the
seven-part series "Sierra Club Chronicles". The series will air as part of
THE GREEN, the network's weekly primetime destination focusing on
environmental topics. A new episode will air every Tuesday at 9:00pm
February 5th - March 18th. The announcement was made today by Sundance
Channel EVP and GM, Programming and Creative Affairs, Laura
Michalchyshyn.
The series features the dramatic efforts of committed individuals across
the country working to protect the health of their environment and
communities. Ranchers in New Mexico, emergency medical technicians in New
York City, fishermen in Alaska, neighbors of a chemical plant in
Mississippi, all are united in common cause - the fight to protect their
families, communities and the lands and livelihoods they love from
pollution, corporate greed and short-sighted government policies.
"Sierra Club Chronicles" is executive produced by award-winning filmmaker
Robert Greenwald (Outfoxed, Wal-Mart; The High Cost of Low Price)
and is produced by Greenwald’s Brave New Films in association with
Sierra Club Productions.
The deal was negotiated by Ian Bricke, Sundance Channel Director
Acquisitions and Programming and series producer Adrienne Bramhall of
Sierra Club Productions.
Episode Descriptions:
Tuesday, February 5 at 9:00pm
Episode 1: "9/11 Forgotten Heroes"
The terrorist attack on 9/11 was one of our country's most horrific
moments, and the damage continues. Told there were no health hazards in
the aftermath, the truth shows there was and many first responders are now
afflicted and ignored by our government. A group of New Yorkers who gave
everything they had to the search and rescue efforts are now fighting for
justice.
Tuesday, February 12 at 9:00pm
Episode 2: "The Day The Water Died"
March 24, 1989 will forever plague history as one of the worst
environmental disasters of our time. Eleven million gallons of oil spilled
into the Prince William Sound killing thousands of wildlife and destroying
a complex and delicate ecosystem. Exxon promised they would clean up the
spill and promised that those affected would get their lives back. 16
years later, Exxon has still not paid the court-ordered punitive damages.
The citizens of neighboring Cordova, Alaska have not recovered from the
spill: emotionally, spiritually, economically, and environmentally.
Tuesday, February 19 at 9:00pm
Episode 3: "Dioxin, Duplicity and Dupont"
The DuPont plant in DeLisle, Mississippi has been releasing large amounts
of dioxin and heavy metals for nearly 20 years. This film explores health
problems being experienced by residents and former workers, and evidence
that oysters in the area exported for sale around the U.S. have been
contaminated by DuPont's poisonous discharges. About 2,000 people have
filed lawsuits against DuPont alleging pollution from this facility has
harmed their health.
Tuesday, February 26 at 9:00pm
Episode 4: "Range Wars Rage On"
In the West, The Bureau of Land Management has allowed increased drilling
and allowing drilling practices that are killing ranchers' cattle. Now, a
coalition of ranchers including Republicans and Bush supporters are
fighting back.
Tuesday, March 4 at 9:00pm
Episode 5: "Breathless in LA"
The Port of Los Angeles is one of the biggest and busiest ports in the
United States and is surrounded by numerous oil fields. The City of
Wilmington, a predominately Latino community, bears the burden of
industrial blight, pollution, and the health hazards caused by the ships,
trains and trucks that move goods from the harbor to cities and towns
across America. Wilmington residents are fighting to protect their
community from the excessive pollution of and around the port.
Tuesday, March 11 at 9:00pm
Episode 6: "Storm in the Gulf"
The Gulf Islands National Seashore is a thin necklace of pristine barrier
islands off the coast of Mississippi. When a powerful politician paved the
way for the drilling of oil and there, he did not expect opposition from a
coalition of unlikely environmentalists who prefer a lasting tourist trade
and pristine beach to temporary gain.
Tuesday, March 18 at 9:00pm
Episode 7: "Rats to Roses"
Since the mid-1970s through the present day, citizens in the most diverse
and economically challenged parts of New York City have created small
oases of hope and safety through some 800 "community gardens." In most
cases, the gardens were once empty lots full of weeds, trash and graffiti,
but local residents got together to plant flowers, foliage, and, in many
cases, to grow vegetables and fruits used to feed the needy. This
multi-year time arc witnesses the threat and loss of the community gardens
in New York - but also the commitment and resilience of community
organizers.
THE GREEN is presented by Lexus and Citi Smith Barney.
